Behind every great product is a great team. Today’s teams are diverse and dynamic, containing unique skill sets that bring new challenges and opportunities. As a result, each project that requires teamwork can also serve as an opportunity for personal growth and professional development. In software development projects, all members should know what the others are doing and freely access code written by their colleagues. Due to the high demand, code repositories for open-source software have constantly been maturing.

Github, Gitlab, and Bitbucket provide the cloud hosting service to manage the repositories.

GitHub is the largest and the most popular code hosting service since 2008. It helps developers store and manage their code and track and control changes to their code. To host a project at it, the developer should use the Git version control system. GitHub’s interface is user-friendly enough so even beginners can take advantage of Git. Using Git without GitHub generally requires a bit more technical savvy and use of the command line.

BitBucket, like its competitors, is an online source code hosting service. At the time of launch in 2008, BitBucket worked exclusively with Mercurial, but it also has been using Git since October 2011. If you work with Atlassian, you can find that it already integrates with Atlassian software such as JIRA Software, HipChat, Confluence, and Bamboo. Moreover, they own BitBucket.

GitLab began as an alternative to GitHub, but now its co-founders’ plans are much more ambitious: to offer developers around the world a unified environment for creating and product management of IT projects. While all three code hosting services are supported with open source projects, GitLab is the only one that itself is open source. This is pretty much the only differentiating factor between GitLab and GitHub.

The majority of web-based hosting services for projects are interchangeable since they provide a similar set of tools and a similar service quality level. As for many other aspects — it is often dependent on taste or personal adherence to the brand. It is hard to say which one is the best open-source code repository since, due to high competition, many code repository tools bring fine quality to their users. So make sure to list your requirements and choose the one that suits your team best.
